1/31/2023 10:47:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (10-12, 4-5 MAC) lost to the top-seeded Akron Zips (16-6, 8-1 MAC) on Tuesday evening, 81-64. Curtis Jones recorded his eighth 20-point performance of the season, finishing with 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Isaiah Adams scored 13 points on the night as Kidtrell Blocker recorded five assists.
After an Adams' three-pointer to give the Bulls a 3-2 lead, Akron led the rest of the way. Akron jumped out to a 19-9 lead at the under 12:00 media timeout. Buffalo struggled to get into a rhythm as they had 11 first half turnovers to Akron's seven. Akron outscored the Bulls 19-5 in points off turnovers. In the first half of action, the Zips outshot the Bulls 56.7% to 30.8% from the floor. This led to a 17-point deficit at the half.
The second half was fairly even as the Bulls were 16-for-31 (51.6%) from the floor as Akron was 14-for-26 (53.8%). The key difference was from three-point range. The Zips made seven of their 11 second half attempts with C. Jones making the Bulls' lone three on 10 shots. Second half scoring was even as each team finished with 39 points. Alumni Arena got loud as the Bulls crept back to cut the Akron lead to 12 off of C. Jones' three with just under 6:00 to play. This led to a 9-0 run, the game's longest run. However, Buffalo's efforts would come up short as Akron scored on four of their next five possessions.
Overall, Buffalo was 24-for-57 (42.1%) from the floor, 5-for-20 (25.0%) from three-point range, and 11-of-16 (68.8%) from the charity stripe.
The Bulls are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 as they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to play the Western Michigan Broncos. The game will tip at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
