Bulls Host the Akron Zips for Tuesday Night Showdown

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (10-11, 4-4 MAC) will host the Akron Zips (15-6, 7-1 MAC) on Tuesday evening at Alumni Arena. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ with Peck Paul on play-by-play and Matt Mattia as the analyst. Josh Whetzel will be on the radio call. The Bulls are coming off a 74-68 loss to the top-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes on Friday evening. Isaiah Adams recorded his third game scoring at least 20 points, finishing with 23. LaQuill Hardnett notched another double-double on the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. This marked the 11th game in which a player secured 10 or more rebounds in a game. Armoni Foster added five assists on the night. He has now had at least five assists in eight of the last nine games.
The matchup between the Buffalo Bulls and Akron Zips will be the 71st all-time meeting. Akron leads the series, 36-34. The Bulls are 22-10 at home against the Zips. Buffalo's last home loss to Akron came on Feb. 24, 2017, 89-83. The Bulls and Zips have faced each other in three of the last four MAC Tournaments with the Bulls edging out the Zips, 2-1. Previous opponents that were in the poll were Colgate, Drake, James Madison, Toledo, Ball State, and Kent State.

The reigning MAC Champions lost to UCLA in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Head Coach John Groce is in his sixth season at Akron and holds a record of 109-65 with the Zips. Overall, Groce is 291-197 throughout his 15-year career. Akron was selected to finish third in the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll receiving 127 points and two of the 12 first place votes. They also received two MAC Tournament Champion votes.The Zips have two of the highest scorers in the MAC. Xavier Castaneda leads the team with 20.3 ppg. with Enrique Freeman averaging 15.0 ppg. As a team, Akron leads the MAC in defensive scoring, allowing 63.0 opponent ppg.
