KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (8-7, 3-3 MAC) battled back in the second half but came up short as they fell 68-56 at University Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Three Bulls scored in double figures led by Jazmine Young who scored 17 points to go with seven rebounds and three steals. Zakiyah Winfield narrowly missed out on a double-double as she had 16 points and eight rebounds and Re'Shawna Stone added 15 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Both teams scored on their opening possession and then after scoreless droughts on both sides, the Broncos used a 6-0 run to take an early 8-2 lead before Young got a pull up jumper to drop to cut the lead to four at the first media timeout. Stone blew by her defender for a layup off glass out of the break, but turnovers plagued the Bulls the rest of the way as the Broncos ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 17-8 lead at the end of the first.
The Bulls started to turn offense into defense as UB came up with three stops and turned them into layups at the other end to cut the lead to 21-14 at the 6:21 mark. WMU scored on back-to-back possessions before Winfield hit Emerita Mashaire on the block for two and Young drilled a triple from the wing to cut the WMU lead to 27-21 and force a timeout at the 4:10 mark. Western Michigan answered with a 9-2 run to go back up by double digits, but the Bulls closed on a 6-0 run, holding the Broncos scoreless for the final 2:26 of the quarter, to trim the lead to 36-29 at the half.
Stone and Latrice Perkins got in the paint for a pair of baskets early in the third quarter and then Stone continued to attack as she drove to the basket for two and then Young hit her in transition for a beautiful fast break basket to tie the game at 39 but UB gave up a second-chance three on the next possession as the Broncos took a 42-41 lead at the media timeout. Winfield and Young stayed aggressive as they got to the rim for a pair of layups before Winfield came up with two steals and scored in transition, but the Broncos scored in the final seconds of the quarter to take a 50-49 lead at the end of the third.
The Broncos opened the fourth quarter on an 11-3 run, holding UB without a field goal for the five plus minutes, to go up 61-52 at the 4:09 mark and that proved to be the decisive blow as the Bulls would get no closer the rest of the game.
Western Michigan outrebounded Buffalo 43-31 and held a 40-36 edge in the paint. The Bulls scored 19 fastbreak points on the day while also scoring 13 points off WMU turnovers.
Up next, Buffalo returns to Alumni Arena to face off against the Bowling Green Falcons on Wednesday, January 25 at 6pm.
