BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (6-5, 1-1 MAC) looks to make it two in a row as they travel to Athens, Ohio for a clash with the Ohio Bobcats on Wednesday, January 11 at 7pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Marty Banister (play-by-play) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 47th overall meeting between Buffalo and Ohio with the Bulls owning a narrow 26-21 series advantage. The Bulls split the two-game series a season ago, most recently an 79-65 win at Alumni Arena on February 23, 2022.
UB dominated defensively for three quarters and withstood a second half run by the visitors to pick up their first Mid-American Conference win, defeating Central Michigan 70-63 on Saturday afternoon. Three Bulls scored in double figures led by Re'Shawna Stone who had a monster game and flirted with a triple-double with a UB career-high 24 points, 10 rebounds and six assists while also adding three steals. Fellow fifth year's Zakiyah Winfield and Jazmine Young also had great games, with the former recording her ninth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds and the later pouring in 13 points to go with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Winfield leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 14.8 points, 11.2 rebounds per game and has recorded six straight double-doubles, bringing her total to nine on the season. She ranks in the top 10 in the nation in double-doubles, rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. Stone has set new UB career-highs in back-to-back games and is averaging in double figures at 13.4 points per game while adding 5.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per contest. Young has scored in double figures in eight of 11 games and is averaging 12.8 points and 1.9 assists per contest. The Bulls lead the MAC in rebounding defense (33.5) while ranking in the top half of the conference in scoring defense (59.2), field goal defense (40.1), 3FG defense (28.8) and field goal percentage (43.2).
The Ohio Bobcats are 2-11 overall and 0-2 in the MAC after falling to Kent State 60-44 on Saturday. Ohio was picked to finish seventh in the MAC preseason poll. The Bobcats are 0-5 at the Convocation Center this season. Sophomore guard Yaya Felder leads the Bobcats in scoring at 18.2 ppg. Caitlyn Kroll (8.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and Kendall Hale (7.9 ppg) are also scoring in double figures. While the Bobcats bring back nine players from last year's squad, they return just one of their top five scorers from last year's squad in Felder. Ohio added four new players, including two freshmen and two transfers. Felder has scored in double figures in 10 of 13 games this season. Ohio ranks sixth in the MAC in three-point field goals made per game (6.8) and free throw percentage (73.1).
Up next, Buffalo will return to Alumni Arena for a two-game homestand, beginning on Saturday, January 14 as they host the Eastern Michigan Eagles at 2pm.
