SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University at Buffalo cross country team competed at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invite hosted by the University of Notre Dame on Friday afternoon. The men finished in seventh place with a total score of 181 points as the women finished 16th with 393 points.
Vassi Klock led the way for UB in the women's gold division 5K race, finishing in 55th place with a time of 18:27.3. Paris Welker (18:51.4), Lexi Bernard (18:56.9), Bronagh Cassidy (19:02.9), and Brianna Urban (19:23.7) were the next four Bulls to cross the finish line. The five freshmen all earned personal bests in the 5K distance.
"The freshmen again led the Bulls in a very fast-paced race. The women held their tempo well," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "There was good improvement from two weeks ago, but also a lot to continue to learn and grow with the young group.
Ryan Buzby was UB's highest finisher in the men's gold division five-mile race, placing 11th with a time of 24:39.2. Sean O'Brien claimed 23rd place in 25:09.3. William Marchant finished 44th with a time of 25:26.7, and Cory Demo finished 50th with a time of 25:31.8.
"The men were very aggressive off the starting line and established great early positioning. However, the quick pace through the mile caused us to struggle over the second half," stated Associate Head Coach Todd Witzleben. "We'll be more prepared the next time we're in a competitive field like this. We're a young team who will continue to develop."
The Bulls are back in action on Friday, Oct. 14 as they travel to Bowling Green for the Falcon Invite.
