BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo cross country team competed at the Iona Meet of Champions hosted by Iona College on Friday morning. The men finished in third place with a total score of 61 points as the women finished sixth with 138 points.
The men's 8K race kicked off the event, with five Bulls finishing in the top-15. Ryan Buzby placed ninth in 25:39.8. Evan Hilbert (11th place, 26:08.3) and Cory Demo (12th place, 26:10.5) weren't far behind. Ty Fluharty finished 14th with a time of 26:14.8 and Alex Hislop finished 15th with a time of 26:16.3.
"Our pack closed very well over the past two miles to move us past Binghamton. As we progress through the season, we'd like to see our top guys move into contention," stated Associate Head Coach Todd Witzleben. "We also have to get over this illness that's passing through the roster. This race was a nice step forward for this young program."
UB was led by a quartet of freshmen in the women's 5K. Paris Welker was the first to cross the finish line in 19th place with a time of 19:23.9. Vassi Klock placed 29th in 19:52.1. Lexi Bernard (33rd place, 20:00.7) and Bronagh Cassidy (36th place, 20:17.1) capped off the Bulls' top-four finishers.
"They ran tough and will continue to get stronger, not only this year but over their next four years," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "We are building from the ground up, and this group is going to be exciting to watch grow."
On Saturday, the Bulls competed in the Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational hosted by Rochester University.
Chloe Freeland (24:52.5), Brianna Urban (25:48.4), Elizabeth Powers (25:48.4) and Lauren O'Rourke (27:02.5) were UB's lone finishers in the women's 6K.
