Bulls Defeat Marist on Final Day of Lion Classic

HAMMOND, LA – The University at Buffalo softball team defeated Marist 9-1 in five innings, before falling to Southeastern Louisiana 8-0 in game two on the final day of the Lion Classic.
Marist got on the board first in game one with an RBI single in the top of the third to take an early 1-0 lead.
Buffalo continued to stay patient at the plate as they drew three walks to load the bases in the bottom of the third and Alexis Lucyshyn helped her cause as she lined an RBI single to left to put UB up 2-1.
The Bulls added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Brianna Castro lined a two-RBI double down the left field line and then Rachel Steffan followed with a first-pitch RBI single to give the Bulls a 5-1 lead. The two-out rally continued as Madison Fernimen drew an RBI walk to put UB up 6-1.
Junior Celyna Shaw got the Bulls going in the bottom of the fifth as she led off with a double to left center field and UB would load the bases for the second straight inning as Sara Kelly and Anna Aguon drew back-to-back walks. Steffan drew an RBI walk and Lucyshyn followed with a two-RBI single down the left field line to give the Bulls a 9-1 run-rule victory.
Lucyshyn led the Bulls, going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI while also picking up the win in the circle, allowing just two hits while striking out four batters in five innings of work.
In game two, Southeastern Louisiana struck first as they scored two runs on three hits to take an early 2-0 lead and would add another run in the third on an RBI double to go up 3-0 and they never looked back as Buffalo was held to just one hit and the Lions went on to win in six innings.
Buffalo returns to action next weekend as they travel to Lexington Kentucky to take part in the Bluegrass Classic, hosted by Kentucky, March 11-12.
