
Bulls Split Opening Day At Bluegrass Classic

LEXINGTON, KY – The University at Buffalo softball team concluded the first day of the Bluegrass Classic in Lexington, KY by splitting action, defeating Eastern Kentucky 4-3 in the second game of the day, while falling late to nationally-ranked and host Kentucky in the first game.
In the opener, the Bulls hung tough for the first four innings against the 12th ranked team in the nation, allowing just one run to the Wildcats, but six runs in the fifth for Kentucky put the game out of reach.
Alexis Lucyshyn drew the tough assignment in the circle, striking out four Kentucky batters.
However, the Bulls quickly regrouped as they faced Eastern Kentucky just minutes after the first game ended Buffalo put two runs on the boards in the bottom of the first inning. UB drew three straight walks to load the bases with just one out. Alexis Matheney then reached on the fielder's choice ground out, plating Madison Fernimen with the first run. A double steal from Matheney and Rachel Steffan, scored the second run for the Bulls.
The Colonials got on the board in the top of the second, but the Bulls responded right away in the bottom half of the inning. Sara Kelly walked to lead off the inning and then took advantage of some wildness from the WKU pitcher as three straight wild pitches plated a Buffalo run.
Eastern Kentucky pulled back within 3-2 in the top of the third, but UB extended their lead in the fifth. The Bulls loaded the bases with nobody out and Matheney drove in two on a single up the right side. The Colonials responded with two in the top of the sixth to pull within 5-4.
Julia Tarantino recorded the win in the circle as she scattered 10 hits, but allowed just two earned runs, while striking out a pair. Lucyshyn came in for the final inning and struck out one in a hitless seventh to pick up the save.
With a day off tomorrow, the Bulls will close out the weekend with a pair of games on Sunday beginning at 12pm against Valparaiso and then a rematch with the nationally-ranked Wildcats.
