KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team rounded out play in the month of February in dominant fashion as they led from start to finish to defeat Kent State 82-64 at the M.A.C Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Bulls improve to 20-8 overall and 14-4 in league play.
Junior guard Dyaisha Fair led all scorers with 28 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Summer Hemphill recorded her second straight double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds and Loren Christie also scored in double figures with 12 points while adding six rebounds and three blocks.
Christie was aggressive early and often as she scored a pair of early baskets and Dominique Camp followed with a three to give UB an early 7-2 lead. Later, Fair sliced to the basket and Christie got free for another layup to give Buffalo a 13-11 lead at the first media timeout. Christie continued to heat up as she got a layup and mid-range jumper to go to spark a 6-0 run to put UB up eight and they would lead 19-14 at the end of the first.
Both teams struggled to start the second quarter, but Fair got the Bulls going as she pulled down a rebound and hit Hemphill and transition and later Jazmine Young scored to put UB up 25-16 at the 6:46 mark. Kent State scored their first field goal in almost four minutes at the 5:25 mark but Fair answered with a big triple and a mid-range jumper to cap an 11-2 run and give the Bulls a 32-18 lead at the media timeout. The Buffalo offense continued to click as Fair found Hemphill with a dime and then Hemphill knocked down a baseline jumper to put UB up 40-22 with just under two minutes to play and they would lead by 20 at the break.
Buffalo shot a blistering 61.3% from the floor, including 3-of-6 shooting from behind the arc, while holding the Golden Flashes to just 27.3% shooting in the opening half.
Kent State opened the third quarter on a 13-4 run to cut the UB lead to 48-37 and force a Buffalo timeout at the 6:07 mark. Young gave the Bulls a spark out of the media timeout as she blew by her defender and got the easy layup off glass to put UB back up by 14. The Bulls offense went on a bit of a scoring drought, but Fair broke through with a great take to the basket and she continued to heat up as she took the handoff from Woolley and buried a deep three at the buzzer to give the Bulls a 60-44 lead at the end of the third.
Fair picked up where she left off as she drilled a triple on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter to spark a 7-2 run and put the Bulls up 67-46. Senior Adebola Adeyeye gave the Bulls good minutes as she converted a pair of layups, the latter off a beautiful feed from Fair, and later Woolley hit Hemphill with a great pass to put the Bulls up by 23 with three minutes to play and that was more than enough to secure the victory.
The Bulls eclipsed the 80-point mark for the 10th time this season and are now a perfect 10-0 when scoring 80 or more points. Buffalo held a narrow 41-38 edge on the glass, including scoring 15 second chance points off 14 offensive rebounds, while also doubling up their opponent in the paint for the second straight game, scoring 42 points inside. The Bulls also scored 15 points off Kent State turnovers while adding 11 fastbreak points.
Buffalo returns to action on Wednesday, March 2 as they travel to Akron for a clash with the Zips at 7pm.
