BUFFALO, NY – The dynamic backcourt duo of Dyaisha Fair and Georgia Woolley combined for 56 points to lead the University at Buffalo women's basketball team to an 83-71 win over Miami (OH) on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. With the win the Bulls improve to 18-8 overall and 12-4 in league play.
Fair surpassed the 30-point mark for the third time in four games as she scored a game-high 36 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Woolley scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half while adding four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior Loren Christie recorded her third double-double of the season, tying a career-high with 14 points while pulling down 10 rebounds.
It was a slow start for both teams before the Bulls turned defense into offense with three straight fastbreak layups to take a 10-6 lead at the first media timeout. The Bulls extended the run to 11-0 on an and-one bucket from Christie and a layup by Woolley, to put UB up 17-6 lead and they would lead 20-12 at the end of the first.
The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter before Miami used a 6-0 run to cut the lead to one at the 6:30 mark. Fair continued to heat up as she scored on three straight possessions, capped by a step-back triple, to put UB up 30-26 at the media timeout. The RedHawks cut the lead to two before Saniaa Wilson grabbed an offensive rebound and powered up for two and later, Fair drained a three from deep and then hit Summer Hemphill with a beautiful pass and she converted the layup to put the Bulls up seven, but Miami hit a three in the final seconds to cut the UB lead to 39-34 at the half.
Woolley got hot from deep to start the third quarter as she knocked down back-to-back threes to give UB a 46-39 lead, and later, the Bulls extended the run to 12-2 with a deep triple by Fair and a fastbreak layup from Woolley to take a 10-point lead and force a Miami timeout at the 5:41 mark. The Bulls continued to attack as they got to the charity stripe with ease where Woolley and Fair knocked down four straight free throws to give UB a 57-51 lead at the 3:18 mark. Hemphill and Christie traded layups and assists to put UB up 62-57 with just under two minutes to play in the quarter and later, Elea Gaba got an offensive board and powered up for two to give the Bulls a 65-61 lead at the end of the third.
Miami tied the game at 65 early in the fourth quarter but the Bulls answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a triple from Fair and am offensive rebound putback by Christie, to give the Bulls a 72-65 lead and force a MIA timeout at the 5:40 mark. Senior Adebola Adeyeye knocked down a mid-range jumper out of the timeout and Fair scored seven straight points, including a steal and score and-one, to cap an 18-6 run by the Bulls to end the game and seal the victory.
"We really tried to stretch our bench today," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "Miami is a good team, but it is important for all of our players to stay ready and some of them need to learn lessons by being out there but I'm glad that we were still able to get the win. I really love the way Dyaisha and Georgia did their job today."
The teams were even on the glass, but the Bulls held the edge in the paint where they scored 36 points, while also scoring 20 points off Miami turnovers and adding 19 fastbreak points.
Buffalo returns to action on Wednesday, February 23 as they welcome the Ohio Bobacats to Alumni Arena for a 7pm contest.
