BUFFALO, NY – As the calendar flips to December, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team opens a two-game road trip at Rhode Island on Thursday night at 6pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
It will be the fourth overall meeting between the Bulls and Dragons with UB winning each of the three previous matchups, most recently a 69-55 win at Alumni Arena last season.
UB put forth a great defensive effort but couldn't get anything going on offense as they fell to Drexel 53-35 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena. Sophomore Kayla Salmons was a bright spot as she recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with two blocks. Fifth year guard Zakiyah Winfield is averaging a double-double at 13.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Fellow fifth year Jazmine Young is also averaging in double figures at 10.0 points per contest. The Bulls lead the MAC in scoring defense (59.0) and 3FG defense (27.1) while also ranking in the top five in field goal defense (38.3) and blocks per game (3.5).
The Rhode Island Rams are 5-1 overall after picking up a pair of wins at the UCF Classic over the holiday weekend with wins over Southeast Missouri State and Samford. Rhode Island women's basketball had its best season in program history in 2021-22 winning 22 games for just the third 20-win season all-time and earning its first-ever WNIT bid. They also received votes in the AP Top 25 Poll and USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Rhode Island was selected to finish third in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll. Junior forward Maye Toure leads the Rams in scoring at 16.7 ppg to go with 5.5 rpg. Emma Squires (11.0 ppg) and Dolly Carins (10.2 ppg) are also averaging in double figures. Rhode Island signed a trio of grad transfers for the 2022-23 season in Hattix-Covington, Sayawni Lassiter, and Squires who all have four years of college basketball under their belts. Rhode Island has shot it well from 3-point range through its first four games of the season. Through three contests, Rhody has made 8.8 shots per game from beyond the arc. Over the last four seasons, the Rams are 31-8 at the Ryan Center.
Up next, Buffalo will return to Western New York for a contest against Big 4 foe Niagara on Wednesday, December 7. Tipoff from the Gallagher Center is set for 6pm.
