KINGSTON, RI – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (1-4, 0-0 MAC) fought hard but couldn't overcome multiple scoring droughts as they fell 71-56 at Rhode Island on Thursday night.
Fifth year guard Jazmine Young led the Bulls with 14 points while Re'Shawna Stone also scored in double figures with 13 points to go with three rebounds and three assists, while Zakiyah Winfield added nine points.
Rhode Island opened the game on a 12-0 run to take a commanding early lead before Emerita Mashaire hit Kayla Salmons on the block for UB's first field goal of the game at the 6:10 mark. The Rams answered with a three, but Winfield hit Salmons for another layup and later, Mashaire put on the moves, spinning, and finishing off glass, to cut the URI lead to 19-6 at the media timeout.
The Bulls attacked out of the break, as Stone got a baseline runner to drop and Mashaire drove through contact getting the bucket and the foul to pull UB within 11 with just under two minutes to play and then Young drilled a deep triple at the buzzer to cut the lead to 27-16 at the end of the first.
The Bulls used that momentum early in the second quarter as they rattled off a 6-0 run in just over a minute, sparked by a long two from Hattie Ogden and an and-one bucket from Stone, to pull within seven. Later, Stone spotted up from the top of the key and drained a three to cut the lead to 33-25 and then forced two straight turnovers to remain within eight at the media timeout. The Bulls offense hit a lag as they were held without a field goal for a six-minute stretch late in the quarter and the Rams took advantage, using a 9-1 run to take a double-digit lead, before Young sliced to the basket for a layup at the buzzer to cut the lead to 42-28 at the break.
Buffalo attacked to start the third quarter as Winfield got to the rim for a pair of layups on UB's first two possessions, but the Rams answered with a 5-0 run to go up by 15. Buffalo turned defense in to offense as they held Rhode Island scoreless for a three-minute stretch and Young came up with a steal and score to pull UB within 47-34 at the media timeout. The Rams hit a pair of threes before Young went into attack mode, going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes of the quarter to cut the lead to 53-40 at the end of the third.
The Rams opened the fourth on a 9-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, before Caelan Ellis drained a corner three for UB's first field goal of the quarter to make it 62-43 at the 5:23 mark. The Bulls continued to fight as Young, Stone and Ogden drilled a flurry of threes to pull UB within 15 with just under two minutes to play but that would be as close as they would get.
The Bulls scored 22 points in the paint and found their stride defensively over the final three quarters as they forced 17 URI turnovers while cashing those in for 17 points on the other end, but the Rams held a big advantage on the glass, owning a 36-20 edge on the night.
