BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (1-3, 0-0 MAC) fell to Drexel 53-35 at Alumni Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Kayla Salmons led Buffalo as she recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with two blocks.
Buffalo got off to a quick start as Re'Shawna Stone hit Salmons and then Jazmine Young knocked down a mid-range baseline jumper to spark a 6-0 run to open the game. After Drexel responded, scoring on three straight possessions, Stone hit Salmons with a beautiful no-look pass to give UB an 8-6 lead at the first media timeout. The Bulls offense hit a lag out of the break and Drexel took a two-point lead, before Hattie Ogden answered, banking home a triple from the top of the key, but the Dragons scored on their final possession of the quarter to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the first.
The Dragons continued their run to extend their lead to five early in the second quarter before the Bulls answered with a 6-0 run, sparked by a Stone jumper and a beautiful no-look pass from Latrice Perkins to Winfield, and later, Winfield returned the favor as she slung a crosscourt pass to a cutting Perkins who finished off glass to give UB a 19-18 lead, but Drexel answered with a second-chance three to take a two-point lead at the media timeout. The UB offense continued to struggle, including a stretch of costly misses from the charity stripe, and the Dragons capitalized as they hit back-to-back threes to spark a 13-2 run to close the quarter to take a 31-21 lead at the half.
Drexel hit another three on their first possession of the third quarter to extend their lead to 13 and the teams then traded defensive stops for a stretch before Winfield hit Young for a fastbreak layup to cut the lead to 38-26 at the media timeout. Perkins then hit a cutting Winfield with a great wraparound pass for a quick layup to make it 40-28 with just over a minute to go, but UB couldn't come up with the necessary defensive stops to close the quarter and Drexel took a 44-30 lead at the end of the third.
Both defenses turned up the pressure to start the fourth quarter before Stone hit Perkins cutting backdoor with a beautiful pass for a layup off the glass and the Dragons got a runner in the paint to drop as the score was 44-32 at the media timeout. Winfield came up with a steal hit Young for fastbreak basket to cut the lead to 44-34 but the Dragons answered with a 6-0 run and that was all they needed as the Bulls scored just one point over the final four minutes of play.
The Bulls held the edge in the paint for the second straight game, outscoring the Dragons 26-18 inside, and were even on the glass at 37 rebounds each but Drexel capitalized on 16 UB turnovers, turning them into 16 points on the other end.
Up next, Buffalo hits the road for a two-game stretch beginning with a contest at Rhode Island on Thursday, December 1 at 6pm.
