Bulls Lose to Bowling Green in a Heartbreaker

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (17-11, 9-7 MAC) saw their six game win streak come to an end against the Bowling Green Falcons (18-9, 13-3 MAC) on Friday evening. The Bulls dropped the match in five sets, 26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 20-25, 12-15.
In total, there were 30 ties and 14 lead changes in the five set thriller.
Buffalo came out strong to start the match. Trailing 15-10 in the first set, the Bulls scored six straight points to take the 16-15 lead. It was then a back and forth set as it would get tied up at 24. Emma Gielas pulled the Bulls ahead at 25-24 as the defense forced an attack error on the Falcons to take the set. Katrin Trebichavska had two aces in the set with Gielas leading the way with four kills. The Bulls had an overall hitting percentage of .243 in the first set, holding Bowling Green to half that at .122.
Buffalo improved their attack in the second set as they hit .294 compared to Bowling Green's .185. Cali Assaley led the offensive attack finishing with four kills in the set while hitting .429. It was a neck and neck set, but the Bulls pulled away in the later stages. After being knotted at 15 apiece, Buffalo closed the set on a 10-4 run to take the set and a 2-0 lead.
After taking a 2-0 set lead on the Falcons, the Bulls struggled in the next two sets. UB never took a lead in either set as they hit .022 and .095 in the third and fourth sets, respectively. Buffalo had 16 attack and four service errors combined in those sets that the Falcons capitalized on. Bowling Green used the mistakes made by Buffalo to force the crucial fifth set.
The Bulls instantly took a 1-0 lead off a Trebichavska kill. Buffalo's largest lead in the set reach three points at the 6-3 mark, forcing Bowling Green to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Falcons took an 8-7 lead at the halfway point of the set. Trebichavska would add another kill and ace to her season to give the Bulls a 9-8 lead. After Bowling Green called their final timeout, the Falcons closed the match on a 7-3 run.
Mandy Leigh finished with 51 assists on the evening. Courtney Okwara led the team with a hitting percentage of .433 with 14 kills.
The Bulls are back in action for a rematch against the Falcons tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. Catch the MACtion on ESPN+.
