Bulls Split Weekend Series with Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (11-10, 3-6 MAC) dropped a heartbreaker against the Ohio Bobcats (11-8, 5-3 MAC) on Saturday evening.
UB lost in five sets, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 19-25, 19-21. In the first two sets there were a combined 24 ties and six lead changes. In the third set, UB dominated as there was only one lead change and tie. In the decisive fifth set that is usually to 15, there were 10 ties and six lead changes.
The Bulls forced 30 Ohio attack errors, as they finished with an overall hitting percentage of .227. The Bulls edged the Bobcats out as they had a .249 overall hitting percentage. The Bobcats did finish with 16 more kills than the Bulls as the teams finished with 79 and 63, respectively. Emma Gielas led the team with 16 kills as Abby Leigh (14) and Katrin Trebishavska (13) finished in double figures. Cali Assaley (9), Courtney Okwara (8), and Mandy Leigh (3) round out the rest of the kills for the team. A. Leigh finished with a team high .481 hitting percentage.
In an intense fifth set, the Bulls found themselves down 5-2 before going on a 4-0 run taking a 6-5 lead. After going down 14-11, it looked as though the match was over as Ohio won the match point. After a UB challenge, the score was reversed to 14-12. It was back and forth until the end, but the Bulls had three chances to take the match. Eventually, Ohio took the match with a 21-19 final score in the fifth set.
The Bulls were dominant at the net as they had 12 blocks. Okwara had two solo blocks and finished with seven total blocks. Gielas and A. Leigh each had one solo block.
M. Leigh had 48 of the Bulls' assists with Maria Futey adding four and Okwara finished with one.
The Bulls are back in action on Thursday, Oct. 20 as they host Kent State at 6 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
