ATHENS, OHIO – A pair of last second shot attempts on the final possession came up just short as the University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell at Ohio 68-66 on Monday night. With the loss the Bulls fall to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Four Bulls scored in double figures on the night, led by freshman Georgia Woolley who scored 15 points. Senior Adebola Adeyeye recorded her second double-double in three games with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Summer Hemphill just missed out on a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Dyaisha Fair also scored in double figures with 10 points.
The Bulls got off to a hot start as Woolley scored the first five points of the game and Hemphill scored on back-to-back possessions to spark a 13-0 run. The Bobcats scored their first field goal at the 5:19 mark but Hemphill answered with a mid-range jumper at the other end to give the Bulls a 15-2 lead at the media timeout. Ohio would heat up from deep as they used a 9-2 run late in the quarter to cut the UB lead to 21-14 at the end of the first.
The Bulls defense continued to wreak havoc to start the second quarter as they would come up with a handful of steals and turn them into points on the other end. Junior Loren Christie then gave the Bulls a spark, scoring seven straight points, including a fastbreak bucket off the assist from Dominique Camp, and a spot up triple on the next possession, to give the Bulls a 34-18 lead at the 5:31 mark. Ohio continued to do damage from behind the arc as Erica Johnson knocked down two straight threes to cut the UB lead to 36-29 at the 1:55 mark. The Bulls fought back as Fair answered with a triple of her own and later, Adeyeye grabbed a big offensive rebound and kicked it to Woolley who knocked down a baseline jumper at the buzzer to give UB a 41-31 lead at the half.
Ohio continued to connect from deep to start the third quarter as they hit a pair of threes to cut the UB lead to four, but Adeyeye answered with a pair of baskets to extend the Buffalo lead to 49-41 at the 4:43 mark. The Bulls offense stalled late in the quarter and Ohio took advantage, using a 9-2 run to pull within one at the end of the third.
The teams continued to battle to start the fourth quarter before Kaylee Bambule hit back-to-back threes to give Ohio its first lead of the game, 60-57, at the 6:26 mark and they would extend their lead to six three minutes later. Christie got a big offensive rebound and finished through contact and later Camp knocked down a jumper off glass to cut the lead to 64-63 at the 2:17 mark. Ohio's Gabby Burris scored on a layup to put the Bobcats up three with 30.3 remaining. Later, Fair drained a three in the corner to cut the lead back to one with 11.6 seconds to go. After Johnson went 1-of-2 at the line, the Bulls trailed by two with the ball at halfcourt but a step back three by Woolley and the follow from Camp came up short as time expired.
Christie and Camp combined for 17 points for UB. Buffalo outscored Ohio 34-22 in the paint and edged them on the glass, 40-38, including 14 offensive rebounds into 17 second chance points. The Bulls also scored 18 points off 14 Bobcats' turnovers. Ohio connected on 11 total threes on the night.
Up next, Buffalo returns home to Alumni Arena for a pair of games starting on Wednesday when they host Ball State at 7pm.
