BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team continues Mid-American Conference play this weekend when the Bulls head to Bowling Green for a pair of matches. The Bulls and Falcons both lead the MAC East with 2-0 conference records and overall are two of three teams still undefeated in league play. Friday's match will begin at 6pm, followed by a 4pm contest on Saturday.
The Bulls are 9-5 on the season overall after defeating Miami (OH) twice last weekend in the MAC opener for both teams. Buffalo defeated the RedHawks in five on Friday and then swept them in Saturday's action.
Offensively, sophomore Milla Malik has already eclipsed the 200-kill mark on the year and has 202, average 3.67 per set, which is amongst the MAC leaders. Junior middle blocker Courtney Okwara is second on the team with 120 kills and leads Buffalo with a .357 hitting percentage. Last weekend, Okwara hit over .570 in the two matches against Miami.
Freshman setter Mandy Leigh has continued to be one of the best distributers in the league with 539 assists, averaging just under 10 per set. She is also tied for the team lead in aces and amongst the leaders in digs.
Defensively, freshman Hannah Jacoby continues to lead UB in digs, one of five players with over 100 on the season. Jacoby has 156 and fellow freshman Maria Futey is right behind her with 151. Sophomore Olivia DeBortoli is one of the top blockers in the league, averaging 1.05 per set.
Bowling Green went 22-2 in last year's COVID-19 shortened season, nearly going perfect in the regular season. The Falcons won the MAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. This season, the Falcons are 6-6, highlighted by a 3-0 victory at Notre Dame. BGSU played two ranked teams in non-conference play in BYU and Pitt.
Petra Indrova, the reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Week, leads Bowling Green with 151 kills, averaging 3.60 per set. She is followed by Katelyn Meyer, who has 134 on the season. Hanna Laube, who was named MAC Setter of the Week, has dished out 373 assists.
Defensively, Julia Walz, the MAC Defensive Player of the Week, leads BG with 138 digs, followed by 120 from Yelianiz Torres. Katie Kidwell leads them in blocks with 43.0, averaging 1.02 per set.
