Barberic Named a Candidate for 2021 Senior Class Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – University at Buffalo women's soccer graduate student Marcy Barberic has been named one of 30 candidates nationwide for the 2021 Women's Soccer Senior Class Award.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior or graduate-student and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition.
Barberic, one of the most threatening forwards in the Mid-American Conference, was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year in the spring. Among her accolades were also United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region First Team honors as well as a spot on the All-MAC First Team. She was also named to the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List earlier this season.
Through her first nine games this season, Barberic has continued to move up the UB career record books as she is currently ranked sixth in goals (30), sixth in points (74) and 13th in assists (14) while appearing and starting all 73 games in four-plus seasons in the blue and white. She also leads the MAC and ranks 23rd in the nation in goals per game (0.78), while also ranking 32nd in points per game (1.78), 18th in game-winning goals (3), 26th in total goals (7) and first in penalty kicks (1.000).
Barberic also excels in the classroom and in the community. The three-time Academic All-MAC selection graduated in May with a 3.227 GPA and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications degree and is currently enrolled in a UB's Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs program.
Community service is very important to Barberic, especially in the Western New York and Buffalo communities of which she is a native. Soccer has provided so many opportunities for her and it's important to her to be able to share the game she loves with others through clinics and events at local schools. One initiative in which she and her teammates are particularly involved is "Team Impact, which matches children facing chronic illness with college teams to help develop relationships and skills that help them persevere through their journey. Sarah Reid has been a member of the Bulls' team for several seasons and is always present on the team bench during games.
Regarding her character, Barberic's work ethic and desire to win are second-to-none and she has truly embraced her role as the "face of the program" and as an ambassador for the University. A three-year captain, she demands the best of herself and her teammates and trains hard every day.
When asked about Barberic, Buffalo women's soccer head coach Shawn Burke said "When your best player trains the hardest and puts in the most time in the offseason, good things seem to follow. Marcy has instilled a culture of excellence within our program and has taken this team to newfound heights. Her dedication to her craft and constant drive for improvement is the reason she is one of the top players in the country."
The candidate list will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches, and fans, who will select a winner who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character, and competition.
