BUFFALO, NY – For the second straight week the University at Buffalo volleyball team has swept the MAC East Player of the Week awards, the conference office announced on Monday. Sophomore right side Emma Gielas was named the MAC East Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Maria Futey was named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week. For the second straight week, freshman Mandy Leigh has earned Setter of the Week honors.
Gielas was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Quest for the Crown this past weekend. Gielas averaged 3.83 kills per set and hit .372 over the 12 sets. Beginning on Friday, Gielas had 17 kills and hit .382 in the win over Norfolk State and then Friday night she added 14 kills and just two errors as she hit .400. Gielas finished the weekend on Saturday morning with 15 kills in the win over Radford, hitting .333.
Futey paced the Buffalo defense as the outside hitter had 46 digs on the weekend, averaging 3.83 per set. She began the weekend setting a career high with 19 digs in UB's win over Norfolk State, notching just under 5.00 digs per set against the Spartans. She then finished just one shy of her career high in Buffalo's other win this weekend, adding 18 digs against Radford. Futey also had nine against Old Dominion. In addition, Futey added a pair of blocks against the Monarchs.
Leigh had another outstanding weekend for the Bulls as she averaged 12.58 assists per set, leading the Bulls to a 2-1 record. Overall, Leigh had 151 assists, to go along with 10 kills, three aces, and 41 digs. Leigh's best match came against Radford, where she had 58 assists in the four set win. The 58 assists were just two shy of the school record for assists in a four-set match and tied for fifth nationally this year for assists in a four-set match. Leigh began the weekend with 48 assists in the win over Norfolk State and added 45 assists against Old Dominion. Leigh had at least three kills in all three matches and reached double figures in digs in all three as well, including 16 against Norfolk State.
Over the last three weeks the Bulls have now had six different players earn weekly awards with Leigh the only one to repeat. Last week, Milla Malik was named offensive player of the week and Hannah Jacoby was named the defensive player of the week. Olivia DeBortoli got the party started by being named defensive player of the week two weeks ago.
The Bulls are ready to open to MAC play this weekend beginning on Friday against Miami (OH) at Alumni Arena.
