
Bulls Close Out Non-Conference Play With 3-1 Win Over Radford

NORFOLK, VA – The University at Buffalo volleyball team closed out non-conference action on Saturday morning with a 3-1 win over Radford in the final match of the Quest for the Crown, hosted by Old Dominion University. With the win, the Bulls complete non-conference play with a 7-5 record.
UB took the match 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-15 as the Bulls outhit Radford, .318 to .256. A kill from sophomore Milla Malik opened a 12-7 lead in the first set, but Radford would pull within 17-14 when the Bulls scored the next three points, capped off on another Malik kill to take a 20-14 lead. A kill by Emma Gielas clinched the opening set.
The Bulls would find themselves trailing 18-16 in the second set, but from there UB went on a 6-1 run to take the lead for good. A kill by junior Courtney Okwara clinched the second set, 25-22.
The Highlanders would stay alive with a third set victory, but UB answered with its most dominant performance in the fourth. The Bulls raced out to the 8-3 lead and never looked back. Back-to-back service aces from freshman Maria Futey extended the lead to 12-5 and the Bulls scored the final three points, including two kills from Malik, the last one that clinched the match.
Okwara and Gielas were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Malik led the Bulls with 19 kills, one of three players in double figures in kills. Gielas added 15 kills and hit .333, while Okwara added 14 kills and hit .300. Olivia DeBortoli had nine kills on the match and no errors as she hit .643. Futey had nine kills, to go along with three aces and a game-high 18 digs.
Freshman Mandy Leigh had 58 assists in the match, finishing just two assists shy of the school record for assists in a four-set match. Leigh also added three kills and 10 digs.
In all three UB players reached double figures in digs, as Hannah Jacoby added 17 as well. The Bulls had 4.0 total blocks led by Okwara, who had four, including a solo.
The Bulls will return home next weekend and open Mid-American Conference play against Miami (OH) beginning on Friday at 6pm.
