SYRACUSE, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a midweek doubleheader at Syracuse on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulls fell 6-2 in game one before dropping game two 9-1.
Syracuse struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Toni Martin hit a solo home run to right field to put the Orange up 1-0 and they would add to their lead in the third inning as they scored four runs on four hits to take a 5-0 lead.
Buffalo had their first runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth, courtesy of singles by Alexis Lucyshyn and Olivia Kincanon and a catcher's interference call, but they were unable to plate a run as they left the bases loaded to end the half inning.
The Bulls would break through in the top of the fifth inning as Lucyshyn blasted a two-run home run to right field to extend her home run streak to four games and cut the Syracuse lead to 6-2 but the rally would come up short as UB was unable to score a run in the final inning of play.
In game two, Alexis Matheney and Lucyshyn led off the second inning with a pair of singles and Matheney would later score on a Syracuse error to tie the game 1-1.
The Bulls would threaten with two on in the top of the third but they were unable to plate a run and that would prove to be costly as the Orange scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Syracuse would then add four runs in the fifth, capped by a two-run home run by Martin, to go up 7-1 before adding a pair of runs in the sixth to seal the victory.
Buffalo returns to action on Friday, April 9 as they open a four-game series against Bowling Green at Nan Harvey Field.
