BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team defeated Bowling Green by a score of 5-4 in both games of their doubleheader with the Falcons on Friday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field.
In game one, Bowling Green got on the board first in the top of the second as they capitalized on a trio of UB errors to take a 1-0 lead but Julia Tarantino, on in relief for starting pitcher Ally Marcano, got a big out to escape the bases loaded jam and end the half inning.
The Bulls answered in the bottom of the inning as Brianna Castro ripped a two-out solo home run off the foul pole in left field to tie the game 1-1.
Buffalo continued to do damage in the third as Alexis Matheney and Alexis Lucyshyn recorded back to back singles and Jenna Richmond cleared the bases with a grand slam over the center field wall to give the Bulls a 5-1 lead.
The Falcons clawed back in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on four hits to cut the UB lead to 5-3 and would add another in the fifth as Evelyn Loyola hit a solo home run to straightaway center to pull BG within one but Marcano came back in and pitched two-plus scoreless innings to preserve the victory.
Tarantino picked up her first win of the season, allowing just three runs on five hits while striking out two batters in 2.2 innings of work while Marcano earned her first save of the season.
The Bulls would strike first in game two as Anna Aguon led off with a solo home run to left center field to give UB an early 1-0 lead.
The Falcons would take the lead in the top of the third on an RBI triple by Makailah Dees and a sac fly RBI from her sister Sammy to go up 2-1.
Buffalo answered in the bottom of the inning as Rachel Steffan smacked an RBI single to right to tie the game at two, and later, Lucyshyn extended her hit streak to eight games as she blasted an opposite field three-run home run to give the Bulls a 5-2 lead.
Bowling Green would claw back in the top of the fifth as an RBI groundout from Sammy Dees cut the UB lead to 5-3 but Lucyshyn forced a ground ball and Steffan made a great play at third and fired across the diamond for the final out of the half inning to limit the damage.
The Falcons would try to rally in the top of the seventh as Madi McCoy cut the lead to one on an RBI single but Matheney fielded the ball and fired it to third base to get the runner and end the game.
Lucyshyn picked up her second win of the season, striking out a career-high eight batters in a complete game effort.
The Bulls will conclude the series with Bowling Green on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
