BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team split its doubleheader with Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls won game one of the day 7-2 before falling 5-4 in the series finale.
Bowling Green started game one with back-to-back hits to take an early 1-0 lead but Ally Marcano responded with three straight strikeouts to end the half inning and limit the damage.
The Bulls would break the game open in the bottom of the second as Alexis Lucyshyn led off the inning with a single to left field to extend her hit streak to nine games. After a pair of free passes loaded the bases, Olivia Kincanon drew a walk to tie the game at one. Later, Anna Aguon kept the bases juiced on a catcher's interference call before Alicia Peters stepped up to the plate and drilled a grand slam over the wall in right center field to give UB a 6-1 lead. The Bulls weren't done yet as the next batter, Alexis Matheney, made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot to straightaway center field to put UB up 7-1.
The Bulls flashed some leather in the top of the fifth as Ally Sobaszek made a fantastic catch on a fly ball to right and threw out the runner at first base to complete the double play. Later, the Falcons would load the bases but the Bulls defense came up big again as Julia Tarantino came on in relief and got a big groundout to end the half inning.
The Falcons would chip away in the top of the sixth, scoring one run on one hit and a UB error to cut the lead to 7-2. Bowling Green would threaten again with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh but the UB defense would step up one more time as Tarantino got a pop up to end the inning and secure the victory.
Marcano picked up the win, striking out six batters in 4.2 innings of relief while Tarantino pitched 2.1 innings of three hit relief.
Lucyshyn got the start in game two, recording a one, two, three first inning and later would help her cause and extend her hit streak to 10 games on a two-run home run to right center field to give UB an early 2-0 lead through two innings of play.
The Falcons answered with two runs on two hits in the top of the third to tie the game at two but Rachel Steffan made a great play at third base for the third out to limit the damage.
Bowling Green took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth on a pinch hit RBI single by Sophie Weber but Lucyshyn would battle back and field a comebacker for the third out to escape the bases loaded jam.
The long ball would continue to power the Bulls as Jenna Richmond blasted a two-run home run to straightaway center field to give UB a 4-3 lead through four innings of play.
Bowling Green retook the lead, 5-4, in the top of the sixth inning on a hit and a UB error. The Bulls looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh but came up just short as they were retired in order to end the game.
Lucyshyn finished with four strikeouts in four innings of work and Madelyn Hickingbottom pitched two innings of relief.
Buffalo returns to action with a four game series at Miami (OH) next weekend.
