KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team split its midweek doubleheader at Kent State on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulls took game one 2-1 before dropping the second game 10-3.
The Bulls struck first in the top of the second as Alexis Lucyshyn drilled a line drive over the wall in right field for a solo home run to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
After tying the game in the bottom of the inning, the Golden Flashes threatened again in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on scoring position but Ally Marcano got a big strikeout to end the inning.
Offense would continue to be at a premium until the top of the sixth inning when the long ball came through again for UB as Alicia Peters blasted a solo home run to straightaway center field to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead. The Bulls would then have runners on the corners after a Rachel Steffan triple and a walk by Alexis Matheney, but UB would get caught in a rundown to end the half inning.
Kent State would put a runner in scoring position for the second straight inning in the bottom of the sixth but Marcano would record back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam. The Golden Flashes capitalized on a UB error to put a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh but Marcano got a pop up to first base to end the game.
Marcano picked up the win, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out five batters in a complete game effort.
In game two, Kent State would take an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the bottom of the first.
The Bulls get on the board in the top of the third as Alicia Peters singled and then later scored on a Kent error to tie the game at one and then Lucyshyn followed with a two-run home run to right field to give the Bulls a 3-1 lead.
The Golden Flashes would answer in the bottom of the inning as they scored five runs on four hits and would add a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-3 lead and that would secure the series split.
Buffal returns to action on Friday, April 23 as they open a four-game series at Central Michigan.
