Bulls Drop Series Opener at Western Michigan, 12-9

KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped its series opener at Western Michigan 12-9 at Ebert Field on Friday afternoon.

The Bulls would strike first as Alicia Peters reached on a Broncos fielding error and Rachel Steffan singled to right field before Jenna Richmond drew a walk to load the bases and Alexis Lucyshyn would capitalize as she smacked a two-RBI single to left center to give UB an early 2-0 lead.

The Broncos would answer as Mackenzie Swinehart led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 2-1.

Steffan started off a big third inning for Buffalo in the top of the third as she blasted a solo home run to left center field to extend the Bulls lead to 3-1. The bats would continue to heat up as Alexis Matheney doubled down the left field line and Richmond followed with an RBI double to straightaway center to put UB up 4-1 lead. Later, Brianna Castro would drill her first career home run, a two-run shot, over the wall in left field to give the Bulls a 6-1 lead.

The Broncos would claw back in the bottom of the inning as they scored three runs on three hits and a UB error to cut the lead to 6-4. Western Michigan would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI double by Swinehart and then Kaylen Glenfield would give the Broncos their first lead of the game, 7-6, on an RBI infield single.

The Bulls tied the game at seven in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Lucyshyn to straightaway center field, but the Broncos broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits to take a 12-7 lead.

Buffalo scored two runs in the top of the sixth on back-to-back singles by Matheney and Richmond to cut the WMU lead to 12-9 but the rally would fall short as Western Michigan retired the Bulls in order in top of the seventh to secure the victory.

The Bulls continue the series against the Broncos with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1pm.
