Bulls Split Saturday Doubleheader at Western Michigan
4/3/2021 6:06:00 PM | Softball
In game one, the Bulls struck first in the top of the first inning as Alexis Matheney smacked an RBI single to center field to give UB an early 1-0 lead but the Broncos answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Buffalo evened the game at two in the top of the third on an RBI double by Jenna Richmond but WMU retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout.
The back-and-forth affair continued in the fourth inning as Carina Catalano and Hannah Bardeen led off with a pair of singles before Anna Aguon blasted a three-run home run to left field to give the Bulls a 5-3 lead.
The Bulls would continue to find success with the long ball in the top of the fifth as Alexis Lucyshyn helped her cause, blasting a two-run home run to right field to put UB up 7-4.
Buffalo would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Rachel Steffan and later, Aguon would seal the game for UB with a monster grand slam in the top of the eighth to give the Bulls a 13-7 lead.
Lucyshyn got her second start in the circle and picked up her first win of the season.
Aguon finished the day with two home runs and seven RBI. The two home runs are tied for the UB single-game record while the seven RBI are just two shy of the single-game mark (9) set by Breanne Nasti in 2001. The four team home runs also tie a single-game program record.
In game two, Madison Fernimen led off the third inning with a single and Aguon followed with an RBI double to right center field and later, Steffan singled to left to score Aguon and give UB a 2-1 lead.
Offense would be a premium until the seventh inning when the Bulls added an insurance run on a Steffan RBI sac fly but they left runners on base and that would prove to be costly as the Broncos scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extra innings where Mackenzie Swinehart won the game for WMU with a walk off home run.
Ally Marcano gave up four runs on just six hits while striking out six in seven innings of work.
Buffalo closes out the series with the Broncos on Sunday at 12pm.
