
Quick Start Falls Short In Five-Set Loss At Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo volleyball team took the first two sets on Thursday evening, but the Bulls fell to Western Michigan, 3-2. It was third straight five set match for the Bulls.
The Broncos took the contest 24-26, 25-27, 25-16, 25-11, 15-6 as WMU outhit the Bulls, .342 to .229. UB trailed 8-7 in the opening set when the Bulls went on a 7-1 run as a kill from freshman Milla Malik put Buffalo ahead, 14-9. The Broncos would pull even at 18-18 and even took the lead, but Buffalo fought off one set point to tie it at 24-24. Kills from Lexi Nordmann and Monika Simkova clinched the opening set for the Bulls.
Western Michigan raced out to a 10-4 lead in the second set and continued to lead 14-9 when the Bulls went on an 11-3 run, taking a 20-17 lead. The Broncos fought off three set points, but a kill from freshman Emma Gielas and a block from Gielas and Nordmann gave the Bulls the second set, 27-25.
However, following the intermission it was all Western Michigan as the Broncos never hit under .350 in any of the final three sets, beginning with the third when WMU hit .538.
Malik led the Bulls with 17 kills, while adding three blocks. Nordmann and Simkova were extremely effective as the two combined for 23 kills and just two errors on 55 swings. Simkova had 12 kills, while Nordmann added 11. Simkova also had three aces.
Gielas finished with nine kills, while Courtney Okwara had four. Junior setter Kyndal Bacon finished with 46 assists.
Defensively, sophomore Jenna Sonnenberg had a career high 26 digs, while junior Paige Beck added 11 and Gielas had seven. UB finished with seven blocks as a team.
The Bulls and Broncos complete their two-match series tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
