
Bulls Roll To 3-0 Win Over Northern Illinois

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team picked up its first 3-0 sweep of the season as the Bulls concluded its weekend series against Northern Illinois with the victory.
The Bulls took the match 25-21, 25-23, 25-14 as UB hit .291 opposed to just .150 for the Huskies. Buffalo raced out to a 6-2 lead in the opening set and never relinquished the lead despite a NIU run. UB took the set, 25-21, winning the first set for the second straight night.
Northern Illinois scored the first five points of the second set, but the Bulls were able to stop the Huskies' run. With NIU leading 12-11, the Bulls rattled off six straight points as a kill from sophomore Courtney Okwara put the Bulls ahead 17-12.
The Huskies would come back to take a 20-18 lead, but the Bulls scored the next four points, including three kills from freshman Emma Gielas. A kill from senior Lexi Nordmann clinched the set and gave the Bulls the 2-0 lead.
NIU led 6-3 in the third, but the Bulls scored the next six points and never looked back. Another 6-1 Bulls' run put UB ahead 16-9 on a kill from Nordmann. A block from Okwara and junior Kyndal Bacon extended the lead to 21-10 and a kill from junior Monika Simkova clinched the set and the match.
Gielas led Buffalo with 13 kills and just two errors as she hit .611 for the afternoon. Milla Malik added 10 kills, while Okwara had eight kills and zero errors, hitting .533. Nordmann was also perfect as she had seven kills and no errors.
Bacon finished with 32 assists and eight digs. Defensively, Jenna Sonnenberg and Simkova each had 12 digs, while Malik added 11. The Bulls finished with 8.0 total blocks led by six total blocks from Okwara.
The Bulls remain home when they host Akron on Tuesday night at 6:00 pm.
