KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team had its chances down the stretch but came up just short in a 65-62 loss at Kent State on Wednesday night. With the loss the Bulls fall to 12-8 overall and 9-6 in league play.
Buffalo was led by sophomore guard Dyaisha Fair who scored a game-high 23 points to go with four rebounds an assist and a steal. Cheyenne McEvans scored in double figures for the fifth straight game with 14 points and Keowa Walters added a season-high 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Bulls jumped out to an early 6-2 lead on back-to-back buckets from Fair to start the game but Kent State responded with an 8-2 run to take a 10-8 lead at the first media timeout. A three from Katie Schumate would give Kent State a 13-10 lead at the 4:05 mark but the Bulls would hold the Golden Flashes scoreless for the rest of the quarter and use a 6-0 run to take a 16-13 lead at the end of the first.
It was a slow start to the second quarter for both teams before Fair went on a 5-0 run to give the Bulls a 23-17 lead at the 6:41 mark and later McEvans would slice to the basket for two to put UB up 25-20 at the media timeout. Back-to-back baskets from Walters and Hanna Hall would give Buffalo a 29-20 lead at the 3:43 mark but Kent State would close the quarter on a 6-1 run to take a 32-30 lead at the half.
Kent State opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 37-32 lead and force a UB timeout at the 7:59 mark. Jazmine Young hit Fair with a beautiful pass for a fastbreak layup to tie the game 39-39 but Schumate would knock down a three on the other end to give Kent State a 42-39 lead at the media timeout. The Golden Flashes would extend their lead to 46-41 before four straight free throws from McEvans and an offensive rebound putback by Walters would cut the Kent State lead to 47-46 at the end of three quarters of play.
The Bulls opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 52-47 lead before Clare Kelly hit a three to cut the UB lead to two at the 7:53 mark. McEvans converted an acrobatic layup in traffic to give UB a 56-54 lead but the Golden Flashes answered with a 5-0 run to take a 59-56 lead at the 4:06 mark. After both teams traded baskets, a pair of free throws from Fair gave UB a 62-61 lead with just over a minute to play but Mariah Modkins hit a floater in the lane at the end of the shot clock to give Kent State the 63-62 lead. The Bulls got the ball back down 65-62 with 10 seconds to go but a final shot from Fair was off the mark.
Buffalo dominated the paint 46-28 and won the battle on the glass 37-31 while scoring 15 fastbreak points but the Golden Flashes shot 9-of-26 from behind the arc compared to just 1-of-8 shooting from deep for UB.
