OXFORD, OH – Four players scored in double figures for the second straight game as the University at Buffalo women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 75-67 win at Miami (OH) on Saturday. With the win the Bulls move to 6-2 on the year and 3-0 in league play.
Sophomore guard Dyaisha Fair led the Bulls with 23 points to go along with seven assists. Jazmine Young scored 12 points and Hanna Hall and Keowa Walters scored 10 points each.
Buffalo opened the game on a 7-2 run, including five straight points from Fair, to take an early lead. The RedHawks responded with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to one before Hall cashed in on a transition three to put UB up 12-8 and they would lead 12-11 at the first media timeout. Buffalo would score four straight points to go up 22-16 at the 1:24 mark but Miami would close the quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 22 at the end of the first.
It would be a slow start to the second quarter for both teams before the Bulls got to the free throw line and cashed them in to take a 26-22 lead at the 7:36 mark and force a Miami timeout. Buffalo would take advantage of a five minute RedHawks scoring drought to extend the run to 11-0, sparked by a three from Loren Christie and a transition layup from Hall, and take a 33-22 lead at the 5:04 mark. The Bulls would continue to stay aggressive as Fair got the bucket and the foul to give UB a 36-24 lead with just over four minutes to play. The offense would continue to click as Elea Gaba grabbed the offensive board and kicked it out to Young for a triple and Fair finished off glass in the final seconds to cap a 22-6 UB run to give the Bulls a 44-28 lead at the break. The six points scored by the RedHawks in the second quarter was the fewest allowed by the Bulls in a quarter this season.
The Bulls continued where they left off to start the third quarter as back-to-back transition baskets by Fair and Gaba gave UB a 50-30 lead and force a Miami timeout. Buffalo would continue to turn up the heat as Fair dished out a dime to Young who converted the transition layup and later Fair kicked it out to Hall at the top of the key for three to give UB a 55-35 lead at the media timeout. Miami would come alive as they closed the quarter on a 16-4 run to cut the UB lead to 59-51 at the end of the third.
Both teams struggled to score to start the fourth quarter with prolonged scoring droughts on either side before Hall dished out a pair of dimes for Walters who scored four straight points to give UB a 65-53 lead at the final media timeout. The Bulls would start to break the game open in the transition game as Walters converted on back-to-back transition buckets to give the Bulls a 71-57 lead at the 3:10 mark. Miami would end the game on a 5-0 run but it was too little too late as UB held on for the victory.
The Bulls won the battle in the paint 38-28 and outscored Miami 21-8 in transition while scoring 15 points off of 14 RedHawks turnovers. Buffalo was also 18-of-20 from the charity stripe.
Buffalo returns to action on Wednesday, January 6, at Eastern Michigan.
