BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team shot just 22.6% from the floor in the opening half and had their late rally fall short as the Bulls fell to Bowling Green 76-69 on Friday night at Alumni Arena. UB is now 3-2 in MAC play with both losses coming to the Falcons.
Buffalo held its only lead of the game at 6-5 following a pair of three pointers from junior Ronaldo Segu. But from there BG went on a 15-3 run, taking a 20-9 lead. Bowling Green would go on to take a 16-point lead into the half.
The Falcons increased their lead to 18 early in the second half, but then the Bulls began to fight back. With Bowling Green leading 53-40, Buffalo went on a 13-3 run as a layup from LaQuill Hardnett pulled UB within 56-53 with 8:18 remaining.
Buffalo cut it to a little as one as a three pointer from senior Jayvon Graves pulled the Bulls within 59-58 with 6:40 left as UB would have three possessions with an opportunity to take the lead, but were unable to do so and BG's Justin Turner answered with a three, putting the Falcons back up by four. BG would build their lead back up to 10 late and go on to win by seven.
Four Bulls scored in double figures led by 17 points from Graves and junior Jeenathan Williams. Segu finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Josh Mballa had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 boards.
Hardnett had four points and nine rebounds off the bench and senior David Nickelberry added two points.
UB was outrebounded by the Falcons, 56-45, including 26 offensive rebounds for BG which it turned into 24 points.
Buffalo actually held the Falcons to just 31.0% shooting, but BG took five more shots then the Bulls and had more success at the free throw line as they went 27-of-37 opposed to 17-of 26 for UB.
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday at Kent State. Tip off is set for 5pm.
