Bulls Drop Saturday Doubleheader at Mason Invitational

FAIRFAX, VA – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games at the Mason Invitational on Friday, falling 10-7 to Hofstra in game one before dropping game two against Big 4 rival Canisius, 4-3.

Hofstra got on the board first in game one, scoring on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Bulls answered in the top of the third as Anna Aguon doubled to right center and Jenelle Martinez singled her home to tie the game at one.

The Pride broke the game open in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits and two UB errors to take a 4-1 lead.

Buffalo battled back in the top of the fourth as Jenna Richmond singled through the right side and Alicia Peters followed with an RBI double to right to cut the lead back to one. The barrage would continue later with the bases loaded as Aguon would blast a grand slam to left center field to put UB up 7-4. It is the first Bulls grand slam of the year.

After cutting the lead to two on a UB error, Hofstra would answer with a grand slam of their own in the bottom of the inning off UB freshman Madelyn Hickingbottom who came on in relief to retake the lead 9-7. The Pride would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth and that would be all they would need to secure the 10-7 victory.

Aguon led the Bulls at the plate going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Hickingbottom was charged with the loss after giving up three runs in one third inning of relief. Alexis Lucyshyn gave up seven runs, just two earned, in 5.2 innings of work.

The Bulls would fall behind to start game two as Canisius took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the top of the first.

Buffalo regained the lead scoring two runs on two hits to take a 2-1 lead through three innings of play but Canisius would break the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits and one UB error to take a 4-1 lead.

Sophomore Hannah Bardeen tried to spark a UB comeback with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one but the rally would fall short as Mykaela Martin was thrown out at home to end the game.

Buffalo will conclude play at the Mason Invitational tomorrow, with a contest against the hosts, George Mason, at 12:15pm.
