ATHENS, OH – The host Ohio Bobcats opened Tuesday night's game on an 18-0 run as they led wire-to-wire in an 80-69 victory at the Convocation Center. The loss snaps UB's four-game winning streak.
Buffalo struggled offensively to begin the night missing its first nine shots, while the Bobcats conversely made five of their first seven shots, most of those coming from behind the arc.
Ohio led 23-6 when the Bulls started to chip away, using a 14-2 run to pull back within five at 25-20. The three-pointer from junior Jayvon Graves with 9:33 left in the first half was his 1,000th career point as he became the 23rd player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. However, Ohio was able to build the lead back up to 15 and took a 39-26 lead into the break.
UB would pull within seven with 14:50 left in the second half as sophomore Josh Mballa rattled off five straight points to pull Buffalo within 48-41. The Bobcats again built their lead back up to 16 though and UB had to keep fighting back, knocking the deficit down to nine on several occasions, including a late three from senior Antwain Johnson with 20 seconds left. However, Ohio sealed the game with a pair of late free throws.
Graves led the Bulls with 16 points including his 1,00th career point. Graves now has 1,013 points in his Buffalo career, which puts him 21st all-time. The Malvern, OH native also added seven rebounds and a pair of steals.
Johnson had 15 points, while sophomore Josh Mballa finished with 13 points and seven boards off the bench. Senior Davonta Jordan finished the night with nine points, five rebounds, and a game-high six assists as he now has 498 career assists.
For the first time since the MAC opener on Jan. 4, Buffalo was outrebounded by their opponent as the Bobcats held a 39-36 advantage on the glass.
The Bulls will return home to open a two-game homestand on Saturday afternoon when Buffalo welcomes Akron to Alumni Arena. Tip off is at 2pm.
