WILLIAMSVILLE, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team improved to 6-1 on the season Friday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Cleveland State. Prior to the match, head coach Kristen Maines was honored for her 100th career victory, which she picked up last weekend at Youngstown St.
The doubles contest was close through out as both teams looked to take an early lead. After CSU won at first doubles, the reigning MAC Doubles Team of the Week in Gabriella Akopyan and Ambre Amat won at third doubles, 6-3. The point came down to second doubles where senior Emel Abibula and freshman Azra Deniz Comlek had to come back from a deficit to win 7-6 in the tiebreaker, leading UB to the early 1-0 lead.
Akopyan picked up the first win in singles as she scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory at three. Comlek then followed that up with a 6-1, 7-5 win at fifth singles and sophomore Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou clinched the match at six with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 victory.
Sophomore Pia Schwarz, who is the MAC's reigning singles player of the week, split the first two sets at first singles, but won when her opponent retired prior to the third. The Vikings would get on the board with a three-set win at four, but Abibula closed out the afternoon with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at second singles.
The Bulls were originally scheduled to head down I-90 on Sunday to play at Syracuse, but that match was canceled, so Buffalo is now off until next weekend when they host a pair of matches beginning on Saturday Feb. 22 against Siena.
