BUFFALO, NY – Freshman Katie Weimer became UB's single-season RBI leader on Wednesday afternoon, breaking a 15-year old school record with a three-run home run. However, the Bulls fell in both ends of a doubleheader to Binghamton.
Weimer set the record during the second game of the afternoon, a wild affair that saw Binghamton win in extra innings. The Bearcats scored the first five runs of the game, but Weimer got the Bulls on the board in the bottom of the third. Buffalo had two on base with one away when Weimer connected with a shot and sent it over the center field fence for her 10th home run of the season. The three runs driven in surpassed the previous single-season record of 43 set by UB Hall of Famer Breanne Nasti in 2001.
Binghamton added a run in the fourth and two in the seventh to take an 8-3 lead, but UB responded in the bottom of the seventh, erupting for five runs to tie the game up. The Bulls put two in scoring position with one away when sophomore Leandra Jew drove in a run as she reached on an error, putting runners at the corners. A single from Weimer scored freshman Courtney Gilbert and a single from freshman Catrell Robertson scored Jew. With two runners on, junior Ashton Earnhardt doubled to the left field fence, scoring two to tie the game up. Earnhardt moved to third with just one out, but the Bulls were unable to bring her in as the winning run.
Binghamton regained the lead in the eighth inning as the Bearcats got a sacrifice fly to break the tie and then Griffin McIver hit her second home run of the game and third of the afternoon to give the Bearcats an 11-8 lead.
The Bulls put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth and sent the tying run to the plate, but Weimer hit a sharp liner which was gloved by the second basemen for the final out of the game.
Freshman Brieanna Baker picked up the loss in relief as she pitched the eighth. Weimer went 2-for-5 in the game as she drove in four runs, giving her 46 on the season. Freshman Ally Power, who started in the circle and pitched 7.0 innings, added a pair of hits from the plate.
In the opener, Binghamton rode a four-run first inning and recorded 12 runs and 14 hits in five innings. The Bulls scored a run in the bottom of the first on a single down the right field line by Robertson, but Binghamton answered with a run in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead.
The Bulls hit three straight singles to open the second and load the bases before Essence Savinon came on as a pinch hitter and she drove in a run as she was hit by a pitch. With the bases still loaded and one away, Robertson drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Earnhardt drove in a run on an infield single.
However, Binghamton responded with four runs in the top of the third and added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for the 12-4 victory.
Freshman Lace Smith picked up the loss as she failed to record an out and allowed four runs in the first inning. Bobbi Langlois saw her first action in the circle since Mar. 16 at South Carolina as she threw 2.0 innings of relief.
Junior Savanna Norcio went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the game, while Earnhardt went 2-for-2 from the dish.
The Bulls will hit the road this weekend for their final Mid-American Conference road series as they begin a three-game set at Ohio. The first contest is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
