ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team split their doubleheader at Ohio on Friday evening winning the opener in 10 innings, 5-3, before a tough 3-2 loss in the second game. UB is now 9-10 in conference play.
Ohio got on the board first in the opener, scoring two in the bottom of the first before UB took the lead in the top of the second. The Bulls loaded the bases with one out when junior Savanna Norcio hit a bases-clearing double, which gave UB the 3-2 lead.
Ohio tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth and neither team was able to take the lead, sending the game into extra innings. The contest remained tied all the way into the 10th inning, when UB used the long ball to take the lead. Freshman Katie Weimer opened the frame with a solo shot, her 11th of the season and that was followed up by fellow freshman Catrell Robertson, who also hit a solo shot to give Buffalo a 5-3 lead. The Bobcats put two on in the bottom of the 10th, but could not score.
Sophomore Charlotte Miller secured the win as she went all 10.0 innings and struck out six Ohio batters. Sophomore Leandra Jew went 3-for-4 in the contest, while Norcio and Robertson each had two-hit games.
In the nightcap, the Bulls got on the board first in the top of the second as sophomore Danielle Lallos grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring junior Ashton Earnhardt. The Bulls remained ahead by one into the sixth when Weimer doubled in a run, giving the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
UB remained ahead by two into the bottom of the sixth when Ohio responded with a two-run double to left center, which chased Buffalo starter Lace Smith. A bases loaded walk gave Ohio the 3-2 lead heading into the seventh. Earnhardt had a leadoff single, but UB was unable to tie the game up.
Smith picked up the loss as she went 5.1 innings and allowed three runs, two of those earned. Earnhardt went 2-for-3 in the game as she finished with two of UB's three hits.
"I can't say enough great things about what we were able to do in game one," said head coach Trena Peel. "A lot of great defensive plays and Charlotte Miller hung in there giving us 10 strong innings and it was awesome to see two freshmen with back-to-back home runs."
The Bulls and Bobcats will close out the three game series tomorrow at Noon.
