Bulls Fall In Weekend Finale At Ohio, 2-1

ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team wound up on the short end of a pitcher's duel on Saturday afternoon, dropping the weekend finale at Ohio, 2-1.

The Bulls left runners on base early, leaving three on over the first two innings before Ohio scored first in the bottom of the second, using a couple UB defensive miscues to score the unearned run. The Bulls tied it up in the top of the fourth as UB staged a two-out rally to load the bases. With junior Savanna Norcio at the plate, the Ohio catcher tried to pick off Courtney Gilbert at third, but threw it away, allowing Gilbert to score. However, UB was unable to tack on anymore.

The game remained tied into the bottom of the fifth as Ohio had two in scoring position with two away when the Bobcats drove in the go-ahead run with a single. The Bulls stranded two runners on base in the sixth and a runner at third in the seventh as they were unable to tie the game up.

Sophomore Charlotte Miller picked up the tough-luck loss as she went the distance, allowing seven hits and just one earned run while walking none and striking out four. UB tied Ohio in the hit column with seven as well all coming from three players. Freshman Katie Weimer went 3-for-4 from the plate, while Gilbert went 2-for-2 with a walk and sophomore Danielle Lallos went 2-for-3.

"This was a great series," said head coach Trena Peel. "A lot of different players stepped up at different times. Charlotte put us in the position to win today. She pitched her heart out! We came up short offensively and had a couple errors at the wrong time. We left too many runners on base in scoring position and we were one hit away from winning this series. I am proud of how we played collectively for all three games."

The Bulls will return to action on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader at Niagara beginning at 3:00 pm. UB will host its final MAC series next weekend when it hosts Miami (OH).
