KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games at Western Michigan on Friday as the Broncos used late rallies in each end of the double dip. UB fell in the first game 5-4 and the second contest 5-3.
UB got off to an early start in the opener as the Bulls scored four runs in the top of the third. The Bulls had two runners in scoring position with just one away when junior Savanna Norcio doubled down the left field line to score two. Following a single by Ashton Earnhardt, freshman Katie Weimer drove in two more runs as she doubled to right center, capping off the four-run inning.
UB continued to lead 4-0 into the bottom of the sixth inning when Western Michigan took the lead. The Broncos loaded the bases with one away when they went on to score five runs in the frame and take a 5-4 lead. The Bulls went in order in the top of the seventh.
Sophomore Charlotte Miller picked up the loss as she went 5.1 innings and allowed five runs, four of those earned, while walking one and striking out four. UB managed just four hits in the game, two of those coming from Weimer.
In the second game the Broncos scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead, but UB tied it up in the top of the fourth as senior Kenzie Koch scored following an error by the Western Michigan center fielder. The Bulls went on to take a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fifth as Norcio doubled to center field and she came in to score on a single to right by Weimer.
UB continued to lead 2-1 into the bottom of the fifth when WMU scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. The Bulls tried to stage a rally in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Following a strikeout, Catrell Robertson reached on an error, which scored freshman Courtney Gilbert from third, but Norcio was thrown out for the second out. UB still had two runners on with two away, but a ground out ended the game.
Freshman Ally Power picked up the loss as she went 4.1 innings and struck out five. Freshman Taylor Light came on in relief and pitched 1.2 innings of hitless ball. Earnhardt had two hits in the contest as the Bulls finished with seven for the game.
UB and Western Michigan will complete the three-game series tomorrow with a single game at 1pm. Depending on weather in the Kalamazoo area, the game could also be played on Sunday.
