KALAMAZOO, MI – Despite scoring first, the University at Buffalo softball team dropped its series finale at Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon, 4-1. The loss evens UB's conference record to 3-3.
The Bulls got on the board first in the top of the second inning as sophomore Leandra Jew reached on an error by the pitcher and ended up at third with nobody out following a steal. She came in to score on a single to right by senior Kenzie Koch.
However, Western Michigan responded with a two-run home run in the fourth and a two-run double in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. UB threatened in the top of the seventh as freshman pinch hitter Adriana Lis opened the inning with a single and the Bulls loaded the bases with just one away. Pinch hitter Catrell Robertson came to the plate, but grounded into a game-ending double play.
Freshman Lace Smith picked up the loss as she went 4.2 innings and allowed six hits and four runs, while striking out one. Junior Savanna Norcio went 3-for-4 from the plate as she had three of UB's five hits on the afternoon. Lis and Koch recorded the other two.
The Bulls are scheduled to return home on Tuesday afternoon for a rare midweek MAC doubleheader. The Bulls will host a twinbill with Akron beginning at 1:00 pm.
