CHARLESTON, SC – The University at Buffalo softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at the College of Charleston on Tuesday as they lost in extra innings 3-2 in the opener and then 5-1 in the second game.
UB got out to the early 2-0 lead in the first game as freshman Courtney Gilbert hit a two-out single to center field in the second inning to drive in Lauren Gambone. In the third inning, sophomore Danielle Lallos hit a two-out single to center, which scored freshman Katie Weimer, who had another extra-base hit with a double in the inning.
UB continued to shutout the host Cougars into the sixth inning when they got on the board with an unearned run. Charleston tied it up in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out single, sending the game into extra innings. UB put runners on in the eighth and the ninth, but Charleston finally scored in the bottom of the 10th scoring on a throwing error for the walk-off win.
Freshman Brieanna Baker picked up the hard-luck loss as she pitched 9.2 innings and allowed three runs, but just one was earned. She struck out four. Weimer, who was named MAC East Player of the Week earlier in the day, had two hits in the game as did Gambone.
UB again scored first in the nightcap with a run in the top of the first as junior Savanna Norcio led the game off with a double and she came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Catrell Robertson. However, it was the last time UB found the scoring column.
Charleston scored two in the bottom of the first, one in the second and two more in the fourth for the final margin of victory. Ally Power allowed five runs, but just one of those was earned. Lallos finished with two of UB's three hits in the game.
"It was another heartbreaker for us in the first game as we gave it our best fight, but wound up short," said head coach Trena Peel. "We fought for all 10 inning and we are right there knocking on the door of greatness. BB pitched her heart out tonight and I am very proud of her. In game two, our defense gave them too many extra opportunities and our bats went cold after the first inning."
UB will play another doubleheader tomorrow when they face the University of South Carolina beginning at 4pm. Both games will air on SEC Network Plus and ESPN3.
