COLUMBIA, SC – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader at SEC foe South Carolina on Wednesday.
In the opener, UB got out to the early lead, scoring the first three runs of the game. Sophomore Danielle Lallos drove in two runs in the second with a single to center and sophomore Leandra Jew singled down the left field line in the third, which scored another run. However, South Carolina responded by scoring the next seven runs, six of those coming in the sixth, including a USC grand slam.
The Bulls tacked on run on in the seventh inning as sophomore Sarah Edwards drove in junior Ashton Earnhardt. Sophomore Charlotte Miller picked up the loss as she was pitching well prior to the sixth inning. The Bulls had six hits in the game, including a 2-for-2 performance from Savanna Norcio.
UB took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, but then the bats went cold for the Bulls. Buffalo got run-scoring singles from Lallos and Jew in the first inning, but South Carolina came back with a run in the bottom of the first and then scored four in the second to take a 5-2 lead. The Gamecocks remained ahead 5-2 into the bottom of the fourth when they added five runs to expand the lead to 10-2. UB was unable to score in the fifth, which ended the game.
Freshman Brieanna Baker picked up the loss as she allowed five runs in 1.2 innings. Norcio had another two-hit game in the nightcap as UB finished with five hits.
"We were just very unlucky tonight. We swung the bats well and put pressure on their defense every inning," said head coach Trena Peel. "We scored first in the first inning in both games, we just didn't get the clutch hit with bases loaded or runners in scoring position to put them away. Charlotte Miller threw five great innings and had some bad luck in the sixth. We are learning a lot of tough lessons on this journey, but it's making us a better team. I believe in us and I know that things are goinig to turn around soon."
The Bulls will head to Savannah State on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
