SAVANNAH, GA – The University at Buffalo softball team snapped a 13-game losing skid with a pair of wins at Savannah State on Friday. UB won the first game 6-3 and then shutout their opponent in the second game, 9-0.
The Bulls scored single runs in three straight innings in the opener to take the 3-0 lead. UB got an RBI single from Danielle Lallos in the third and a run-scoring double from Savanna Norcio in the fourth to take the lead.
Savannah State got on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth and neither team was able to cross the plate again until the seventh inning. UB put two runners into scoring position with one away in the seventh when freshman Katie Weimer hit a two-run double to left field. Sophomore Sarah Edwards than drove in Weimer's pinch runner Taylor Scott with a single to left.
Savannah State scored two in the seventh, but UB was able to keep the lead and win the game. Charlotte Miller picked up the win as she allowed just one run in five innings of work, while freshman Brieanna Baker recorded the save as she struck out three in two innings. Norcio, Lallos, and senior Kenzie Koch each recorded two-hit games.
In the second game, the Bulls dominated offensively, scoring four runs in the first and they never looked back. UB loaded the bases with one out as Edwards drew a bases loaded walk for the first run. The Bulls added another run on a ground out by Leandra Jew and then scored two more runs on an error by the Savannah State shortstop.
UB scored another run in the second on an RBI single to center from Weimer and two more in the third, beginning with a leadoff home run from Edwards. UB scored its second run on a two-out error by the third baseman.
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the seventh when Buffalo scored two more runs as Koch hit a two-run home run to left field, which gave UB the 9-0 lead.
Freshman Lace Smith was unstoppable in the circle as she struck out eight and walked just one in the complete game shutout. Eight different Bulls recorded hits, led by Norcio's 2-for-3 contest.
"I'm so proud of my girls for believing in the process and grinding out these last ten days," said head coach Trena Peel. "Today everything came together- pitching, hitting, and error free defense. Today we finally played UB softball for 14 innings and came up with two W's. Charlotte Miller, Brieanna Baker, and Lace Smith all pitched the way that I know they can. It was great to see them believing in themselves and taking it one pitch at a time."
The Bulls will come back to Western New York for their first game of the season on Wednesday when they head to Canisius for a 4:00pm first pitch.
