
UB Volleyball Heads South For USF Invitational

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team will hit the road for the first time in 2014 as they head down to Tampa, FL for the USF Invitational, which gets underway on Friday afternoon. The Bulls will face South Florida, Florida International and South Carolina State over the weekend.
UB enters the weekend with a 2-2 record after victories over Siena and Canisius in the UB Invite. The Bulls were led offensively by junior Tahleia Bishop, who had 45 kills on the weekend, hitting .248. The offense was run by sophomore Megan Lin, who averaged 11.67 assists per set, currently tops in the MAC after one weekend. Defensively, freshman Niki Bozinoski recorded 64 digs over the first weekend and she currently leads the MAC at 5.33 digs per set.
UB will face the host South Florida in the first match on Friday at 2:00 pm in what will be a battle of the Bulls. USF is 0-3 on the season, but faced some tough competition in the opening weekend against #8 Purdue, #14 San Diego and LSU. South Florida is being led by Erin Fairs, who has 33 kills, averaging 3.30 per set. Alex Mendoza has 48 assists for USF, while Fairs is also the leading digger at 3.30 per set.
UB will face Florida International on Saturday at 11:00am. FIU went 1-3 on the weekend at the Radisson UCF Invitational, picking up a season-opening win over Western Carolina. Lucia Castro led the Panthers with 49 kills, while Anabella Sataric ran the offense with 140 assists. Adriana McLamb led FIU defensively with 43 digs, one of three players with 40 or more in the opening weekend.
The Bulls will close out the weekend on Saturday at 2:00pm when they face South Carolina State. The Bulldogs went 0-4 in their first weekend at the Alabama State Tournament as they faced Tennessee-Martin, Murray State, Southern and Alabama State. Marissa Lawrence led the team with 31 kills over the weekend, while Victoria Rushin had 63 assists. Defensively, Tyler Ockleberry paced the way with 52 digs.
