
Bulls Open Cornell Invite With 3-1 Win Over Iona

ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team continued its unbeaten streak to start the 2013 season as it defeated Iona, 3-1, on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Cornell Invitational. UB is now 4-0 on the season.
After winning the first 10 sets to begin the season, UB dropped its first set in the second today, but still managed to take the match, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 25-16. The Bulls outhit their opponents for the fourth straight match, .133 to .033.
With the first set tied late at 18-18, the Bulls scored five straight points to take a 23-18 advantage, with the run being capped off on a block from junior Liz Scott and sophomore Amber Hatchett. A pair of Iona attack errors gave the Bulls the set, 25-19.
The Bulls overcame an early 8-3 deficit in the second set and went on a 15-6 run to take an 18-14 advantage in the set. However, Iona came back to take the set, the first one the Bulls have allowed all year.
The Bulls got out to a quick start in the third set as junior Taylor Pritchett served her way to the first three points. With UB up 11-9, the Bulls took the next six points, again using the serving of Pritchett during the run. Iona did pull back within one at 20-19, but UB scored five of the final six points for the victory.
As the Bulls entered the fourth set for the first time this year, they raced out to a 7-3 lead in the set. UB never looked back in the set as its lead reached double digits at 22-12 following a kill from Tahleia Bishop. A kill from Scott ended the set and the match.
Senior Christine Fritsche finished with a match-high 16 kills, while Scott and Bishop each finished with 12. In total, nine different players recorded kills and the UB offense was again run by the two-headed attack of Pritchett and senior Dani Reinert. Reinert had 20 assists and an ace, while Pritchett added 19 assists, 11 digs and a team-high three aces.
She was one of three players in double figures in digs, led by 30 from senior libero Kelly Svoboda. In addition to Pritchett's double-double, Fritsche also had one, adding 10 digs. Senior Carissa McKenna led the way in the blocking department with seven total blocks, while Hatchett added six blocks, including one solo.
UB continues action tonight when it faces the host Cornell at 7:30.
