Tracksters Win Seven Events, Set Three Records at Opener
The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams opened the outdoor season with seven first-place and five second-place finishes at the Wake Forest Open. There was no team scoring in the meet as the Bulls established three school records.
Lewis Resets Sprint Record
Miles Lewis won a pair of sprint events for the UB men, including breaking the 100-meter dash mark. Lewis took the 100-meter dash in 10.37 seconds, lowering his school mark of 10.48 set last season. He then followed with a win in the 200-meters in 21.30 seconds.
High Jumpers Also Set New Marks
Emma Siuciak set a new UB and Kentner Stadium record with her victory in the high jump. Siuciak cleared 6-0 (1.83m) to take the title and break Shelly Hamilton's 1999 mark of 5-11.25 (1.81m). The 5-11.25 mark was also the previous stadium record. Siuciak's height is currently tied as the best in the country. Men's high jumper Chris Reape scored a second-place showing with his leap of 6-10.25 (2.09m), but broke teammate John Strickland's outdoor record from last season by three-quarters of an inch. Mike Morgan and Strickland finished sixth and seventh, respectively, as each cleared 6-6.25 (1.99m).
Jones, White Again Lead Throwers
Coming off their second-team All-America performances at the NCAA Indoor National Championships last weekend, Jonathan Jones and Shante' White started the outdoor season with victories. Jones won the men's shot put with a throw of 62-1.75 (18.94m). White took the women's hammer throw with a distance of 189-8 (57.52m). White also won the women's discus at 152-2 (46.39m).
Women's Hurdlers Reach Finals
Brooklynn Ventura helped the UB women to three of the top seven spots in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Ventura took second in the finals in 13.85 seconds with Kristina Arcury finishing sixth in 14.83 and Sabrina Bush placing seventh also in 14.83. Picking a third-place finish for the UB women was Regine Lazard as she finished the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.80.
Toledo Meet Up Next For Squads
The Bulls are idle this coming weekend. They will travel to the Toledo Collegiate Challenge on March 29 and 30 for their next meet. Both squads finished second to MAC rivals at last season's meet on March 31, 2012. The UB men placed behind Central Michigan by just 11 points while the women trailed team champion Toledo by eight in the 12-team meet that also included MAC rivals Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan.
