
Bulls Split Doubleheader At Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, CA – The University at Buffalo softball team continued Spring Break action on Wednesday, splitting a pair of games at Long Beach State. The host 49ers took the opener, 8-3, and then Buffalo won the nightcap, 10-3.
Long Beach State scored five unanswered runs early in the first game before Buffalo came through with a run in the top of the fourth as senior Andi Saucier hit a one-out double, which scored Jessica Griffin. The 49ers scored another three runs in the bottom of the third before UB scored single runs in the sixth and seventh. The run in the sixth came off a wild pitch, while the seventh-inning running came on a ground out.
Junior Heather Ryder picked up the loss as she allowed seven runs in four innings of work. Sophomore Alexis Curtiss went 2-for-3, contributing two of the team's five hits.
In the nightcap, Buffalo got out to a hot start, scoring the first seven runs of the game. Curtiss doubled in a run in the first inning, while junior Sammi Gallardo, who scored on an illegal pitch in the first, hit an infield single to drive in a run in the second. Curtiss singled in another run in the third inning and senior Caitlin Dekker drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field. Curtiss drove in another run with a ground out in the fourth.
Long Beach State came through with a run in the fifth inning, but Buffalo responded in the seventh as Gallardo launched a three-run home run to left field. The 49ers scored two in the bottom of the seventh, but Buffalo was able to pick up its fourth win of the year.
Junior Tori Speckman picked up her second win as she pitched the complete game, striking out six. Gallardo went 4-for-5 in the contest with four runs batted in, while Curtiss and Karly Nevez each had two hits. As a team, UB recorded 14 hits.
The Bulls remain on the West Coast this weekend for the San Diego Classic, opening play on Friday against San Diego at 7:30 pm.
