
Bulls Drop A Pair In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA – The University at Buffalo softball team lost a pair of games today in the first day of the San Diego Classic II, losing 6-0 to San Diego and 4-2 to San Diego State.
Buffalo was shut out in the opener as San Diego scored two runs in the bottom of the first and another three runs in the bottom of the second to race out to a 5-0 lead. USD added another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Four of the runs were charged to junior Heather Ryder, who picked up the start and went 1.1 innings. Freshman Nicole Aviles was charged with the other run. Buffalo recorded just three hits in the opener, one each from Alyssa Ward, Alexis Curtiss and Andi Saucier.
The second game was a pitcher's dual for the first five innings as neither team was able to score until the sixth. Junior Tori Speckman pitched the complete game, striking out six batters despite picking up the loss. She finally allowed a run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run and then the Aztecs added three runs late in the seventh inning.
The Bulls finally hit the scoreboard for the first time all day in the bottom of the seventh, picking up a pair of runs. The Bulls loaded the bases with two outs and junior Sammi Gallardo singled to left field, driving in Tori Pettine and Jessica Griffin. However, the Bulls got not closer and fell to 4-15 on the year.
Buffalo continues action in San Diego tomorrow with games against UNLV and Texas Tech.
