Bulls Drop Weekend Finale To Colgate, 3-1

HAMILTON, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team finished its opening weekend at the Colgate Classic with a 3-1 loss to the host Raiders, ending a weekend that saw the Bulls go 2-1. Despite hitting .450 in the second set, UB hit just .140 for the match.
The Raiders took the match 25-21, 8-25, 25-22, 25-20 despite the Bulls winning nearly every statistical category, including hitting percentage.
Despite a strong start from senior Abby Niekamp, the Bulls dropped the opening set to Colgate for the second straight day. Niekamp had five kills and two aces in the set despite the Bulls hitting just .081 as a team.
The Bulls came out as a completely different team in the second set, hitting .450 to take the set 25-8. Freshman Liz Scott had four kills in the set, while freshman Kayla Nagle came on to record three straight service aces.
Colgate regained the lead in the third with a 25-22 victory as the Bulls were unable to hold on to an early advantage in the set. After an outstanding hitting percentage in the second set, the Bulls hit just .114 in the third.
The fourth set was another that went back and forth, but the Raiders held on to the lead late, recording their highest hitting percentage of the match, taking the set 25-20.
The Bulls were led by Scott, who had 11 kills and just two errors on 31 swings. Sophomore Dana Musil added nine kills, while Niekamp had seven. Sophomore Christine Fritsche added six kills, while Carissa McKenna added four. Sophomore Dani Reinert had a match-high 32 assists. Niekamp also added a match-high four service aces and eight total blocks.
As a team the Bulls had 15 total blocks with Scott adding and McKenna adding six, including two solos. Musil finished with 19 digs, while sophomore Kelly Svoboda added 17.
Lindsay Young led the way for Colgate with 13 kills, the only Raider to reach double figures. Defensively they had three different players in double figures in digs.
The Bulls will be back in action next weekend as they head to Bloomington, IN for three matches. The Bulls will face Youngstown State on Friday at 5:00 pm.
