Men Fourth, Women Ninth at MAC Championships
The Univerity at Buffalo's men's and women's track and field teams competed at the MAC Championships at Bowling Green's Perry Field House over the weekend. The UB men scored 63 points to finish fourth in a five-team race while UB women finished ninth among the 12 MAC schools with 33 points. Akron's men (161) and Eastern Michigan's women (118) won the team titles.
Golabek, O'Brien Sweep Shot Put Titles
UB swept the men's and women's shot put competitions with Rob Golabek and Becky O'Brien claiming their first indoor titles after both won titles at the 2010 outdoor championships. Golabek threw 61-0 (18.59m) to win the men's event by nearly three feet over Central Michigan's Alex Rose. UB's Corey Knox finished third with a season-best throw of 56-4.75 (17.19m). O'Brien, who set the MAC record in the women's shot put earlier this season, eclipsed the MAC Championship Meet record with her win on Saturday. O'Brien was successful on only two of her six attempts, however both throws were farther than any other thrower in the field. After throwing 52-4.50 (15.96m) on her first attempt, O'Brien let loose her winning throw of 54-9.25 (16.69m) to break the meet record of 54-4.50 (16.57m) previously set by Kent State's Leslie Vidmar in 1998. O'Brien won the event by 8.5 feet over Miami's Alexandra Roberts. UB's Rachel Roberts was fourth at 48-0 (14.63m) while Shante' White finished seventh at 46-2.75 (14.09m). O'Brien was also named the top field performer of the meet.
Cameron Comes From Behind to Win Heptathlon
Russell Cameron rallied from second place on Friday to win his first MAC heptathlon title. Cameron broke Steve Esler's 2003 record with his 5,364 point total for the seven events. On Saturday, he set a personal best in the pole vault portion, clearing 15-5 (4.70m) to tie for first. He also had a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles portion in 8.44, a season-best. After Friday's first four events, he was 190 points behind the leader following second-place finishes in the shot put at 43-5.75 (13.25m) and high jump with a season-best of 6-5 (1.96m).
Bulls Place Four on All-MAC Teams
The Bulls had four individuals earn All-MAC honors. First-team honorees were those that won league titles, including Russell Cameron, Rob Golabek and Becky O'Brien for UB. The second-team consisted of those individuals that had attained a second-place finish in an event. With his finish in the men's 3,000-meters, John Inzina grabbed a spot on the men's second-team. Inzina finished the race in 8:32.12, cutting his season-best mark by five-hundredths of a second and was just a second behind Kent State's Kiplangat Tisia. Inzina was also part of UB's distance medley relay time which set a new season-best time of 10:08.20.
McClary Ties Sprint Record
Sophomore Jamiee McClary tied her school record in the women's 60-meters in 7.60 seconds. She missed making Saturday's championship field, however, by one-hundredth of a second placing 10th in the qualifying round as the top eight finishers moved into the finals. She also helped the 4x400-meter relay squad to a third-place finish.
