BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team put forth its most balanced effort of the season, sweeping Bowling Green, 3-0, and giving head coach Todd Kress his 300th collegiate win. The win was just UB's second 3-0 sweep of the season and improves its record to 11-16 and 4-9 in the MAC. The Bulls also put themselves back into MAC Tournament contention with just three matches to go.
The Bulls took the contest 25-20, 25-23, 25-15 as they hit .227 for the match, including .303 in a dominating third set effort.
The Bulls got their lead up 12-9 early in the first, but the Falcons cut it to two at 18-16. The Bulls responded by scoring the next three points, on their way to the 25-20 win.
The second set was by far the most competitive with the Falcons getting out to a 12-10 lead. However, the Bulls scored the next three point to take a 15-12 advantage. The set remained tied at 23-23 when freshman Alessandra Jovy-Heuser fired home a kill to give UB the lead. A Bowling Green hitting error sealed the set for the Bulls.
The Bulls went on to dominate the third set, leading through out. After scoring the first three points of the set, UB built its lead up to 12-4. The Bulls lead by as many as 11 at 20-9, taking the set 25-15.
"I am very proud of the effort our team put forth tonight," said Kress. "This is exactly the type of win I would have described if you asked me what I wanted 300 to be like. We know we can enjoy this one tonight, but we have to come back with this same intensity tomorrow against Miami."
The Bulls were led by 15 kills from sophomore Dana Musil, who had just seven errors on 40 total swings. Freshman Liz Scott added 13 kills and just four errors, while UB's two middles combined for 12 kills and just two hitting errors. Jovy-Heuser had seven kills, while Carissa McKenna added five. Freshman Sable Staller added four kills.
Sophomore Dani Reinert had 38 assists on the night, adding eight digs. Fellow sophomore Kelly Svoboda led the way with 14 digs, while Musil completed the double-double with 12 digs. McKenna had a match-high six blocks, including three solos, while Jovy-Heuser added four. Three other players finished with two blocks.
The Bulls will wrap up the home portion of their schedule tomorrow night when they host Miami (OH). Match time is set for 6:00 pm. Prior to the match UB will recognize seniors Abby Niekamp and student assistant coach Bethany Prather.
